How appropriate and spot on for our run-up to the Projectkin Community Members’ Corner submissions deadline on the theme of “Place…” (Also, this is just around the corner from Projectkin HQ in Berkeley, California.) 😉https://lnkd.in/gGffEum2

An interesting discussion brewing just as social platform-fights go mano-a-mano. 🤜🤛 Here's how I see it affecting the Genealogy & Family History communities: - #AncestryHour and #GenChat on X/Twitter, a primary way for conversations to start and connections to be made has turned to a ghost town. - #GenealogyThreads is meanwhile hopping over at Threads. There's real potential in the warmth and engagement. "Niceness" is something everyone is commenting on. (Mastodon, Bluesky, and others... also very nice, but they're not feeling the momentum.) Meanwhile over in the paid-creator field, the fur is going to fly to Patreon unleashes their creators to beat back Apple's demand for a 30% cut. Substack just jumped support Patreon but so far they're diving below the breaking surf... From a post by Substack founder HAMISH MCKENZIEhttps://lnkd.in/gUWt_Y3R See also https://lnkd.in/gt2NQHaDWe think this matters a lot to family historians and genealogists right now. There's a hunger for community and their carefully developed groups and timed hashtags gatherings are coming apart. For my Projectkin Community, I remain platform independent, but have put my lot in with Substack for now. Owning my lists and content is key. I'm happy to discuss why. I know that many of you are deep into all of this, and I'd be curious as so your thoughts.

TBH, it’s been a bit of a surprise to see how well the experiment in our Members’ Corner has gone. (Https://https://lnkd.in/gawat9Mh)Not one to leave things well enough alone, I’m building on it either a special two-month cohort focused on stories of “place”. As many of you know, we lost our mom in 2022 after a long battle with vascular dementia. I've since turned my focus to my not-for-profit community,Projectkin for family historians hooked on stories.I'm thrilled next week to put a loop around dementia and family history asJude Rhodes joins us for a special "Project Recipe" program on Thursday. Jude is a semi-retired RN in Yorkshire, England, caring for dementia sufferers. She's also a professional genealogist and has discovered an approach that combines family history storytelling with caring for dementia patients. She shared an article about it this week and will be our special guest at our program next week. More athttps://lnkd.in/gssiCKCu

Join us next week on Kathy's Corner, as Kathy Stone discusses organizing your digitized collection while working on projects. Keeping your original archive intact while archiving projects is a real challenge. Get it wrong, and you risk creating a mess of duplicates. Our program is on Thursday, July 25th, at 3/6 PM Pacific/Eastern, 11 PM BST, and 8AM AEST. I was so excited about the Projectkin Community “All About That Place” announcement this week that I almost forgot to mention the coverage in Dick Eastman’s newsletter: https://lnkd.in/guq2H4ZVIt's old-skool, but so is my community. 😊 (And we're okay with it.)

I expected that engaging a community would be difficult, but the key is trusting the people you've attracted. Our community members have turned into partners with me in this. 🥹 Oh, and... it's a lot of fun.

When I started Projectkin.org, I figured I'd be doing presentations each month teaching members new tips an tricks for using technology to explore family history. Nope. That's not what happened. Together, we've built a vibrant community exploring ideas. Here I've announced new programs ranging from using family history to engage with loved ones suffering from dementia (Aug-8 with Jude Rhodes) to surprising discoveries in a professional's own family history (Jun-20, a new series with Emma Cox). Technology is just the water we swim in. As it should be. Join us? It's all free.
